Gary was born in 1967, in Limerick, Republic of Ireland. He played rugby and served in the Army Reserve. He graduated from the National College of Art & Design, Dublin, with a ‘useless’ degree in Industrial Design - Ireland has little industry and no product design.
Gary subsequently worked as a graphic designer, journalist, and waiter. In 1997, he launched his own politics/pop culture magazine, called Six. Sadly, this crashed in 2002, following the post-9/11 advertising drought. Gary says he’s still a little bitter about that. His published works to date are all journalistic, and appear in the following publications: The Big Issue, Six, Phoenix, www.cpu.ie.
Wondering what to do next, Gary decided that writing was the one thing he loved. After a couple of false starts, he developed an interesting character - Charlie Doyle - and an exciting plot. Pure Mad was born. It was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger Award in 2005.
Gary is inspired by Norman Mailer, Martin Amis, Philip K Dick and Elmore Leonard. He recently loved Cloud Atlas and 1984, and is currently reading Jim Crace.
An avowed atheist, Gary lives in Dublin with his ‘hot wife, Bernadette, and two wonderful daughters’. He loves red wine, Dali, onions, Spain, and is interested in history, geography and science. Gary’s ambition is to write the definitive literary thriller.
WORK IN PROGRESS
- Pure Mad
A crime thriller set in Limerick - will be first published fiction. Story about a private detective, Charlie Doyle, who's a pawn in a power struggle between an indigenous criminal gang and a Russian billionaire who wants to take over the city. Charlie's personal life is full of problems, so things certainly get more complicated when his friend, a cop, decides to frame him for murder. Charlie does a good job at orchestrating his own downfall, however, by falling for a gangster's wife. Add in African muti, a paedophile killer and a mother in a mental hospital, and you've got enough twists to ensure it all ends in tears. Or does it?
- Pure Hate
Charlie returns in PURE HATE, which details a race with the CIA in the hunt for a stolen anti-aircraft missile and a kidnapped teenager.
- The God Virus
This work in progress is a conspiracy thriller about the origin of human DNA and the forces that want Dr William Bunk, an all-too-human scientist, to fail in his quest to conclusively prove that God doesn’t exist.
